Sheffield United
Also written as Sheff Utd, Sheffield Utd.
The club
Sheffield United were founded on 22 March 1889 and play at Bramall Lane in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, a ground that holds 31,884. They are the Blades, a name taken from the city's cutlery trade, and play in red and white stripes with black shorts.
Recent seasons
United have spent most of this run moving between the top two divisions. They were relegated from the Premier League in 2020/21, finishing 20th. In the Championship they were fifth in 2021/22, losing in the play-offs, then runners-up in 2022/23 and promoted. The return to the Premier League in 2023/24 went badly: they finished 20th and went straight back down. In 2024/25 they were third in the Championship and again failed to go up through the play-offs. Last season, 2025/26, was their worst of the sequence. They finished 13th with 60 points from 46 games, 18 wins, six draws and 22 defeats, scoring 66 and conceding 66. 2026/27 is their third consecutive Championship season.
The 2025/26 campaign was defined by its opening weeks. Chris Wilder's contract was terminated by mutual consent before the season began and Rubén Sellés was appointed on a three-year deal. Sellés lost his first five matches, the worst start in the club's history, and was sacked on 14 September 2025. Wilder was reinstated the following day, 15 September, on a two-year contract. United went out of the EFL Cup in the first round and the FA Cup in the third. Patrick Bamford was the top league scorer with 12.
Honours and landmarks
Sheffield United won the League title in 1897/98 and the FA Cup four times, in 1899, 1902, 1915 and 1925. The 1915 final, played at Old Trafford during the First World War, is remembered as the Khaki Cup Final. Record attendance is 68,287 against Leeds United in an FA Cup fifth round tie on 15 February 1936, one of the largest crowds recorded at any English club ground. Bramall Lane is among the oldest grounds in world football still in use for professional football, having staged cricket as well before United were formed. The club is currently owned by COH Sports, an American consortium led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, who completed their takeover in December 2024 and serve as co-chairmen; they succeeded Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Notable scorelines
Record victory: 10-0, achieved twice, away to Port Vale in Division Two on 10 December 1892 and at home to Burnley in Division One on 19 January 1929. Record defeat: 0-8 against Newcastle United in the Premier League on 24 September 2023, during the relegation season. From 2025/26, the results a writer is most likely to want are the 3-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in the Steel City derby and a 4-0 home win against Stoke City; on the other side, a 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town and a 4-1 home defeat to Bristol City on the opening day.
Head-to-head notes
No published all-time head-to-head records were established for Sheffield United's 2026/27 opponents. The club's official site was not successfully consulted for this dossier and web search was unavailable, so treat this as a gap in the research rather than as a finding. The one recent meeting on record with a 2026/27 opponent is a pre-season friendly: United won 2-0 at Rotherham United on 25 July 2026. Their record attendance fixture, against Leeds United in 1936, and their record defeat, against Newcastle United in 2023, both involve clubs they will not meet in the Championship this season.
