Shelbourne
The club
Shelbourne Football Club were founded in 1895 in Ringsend, Dublin, and play at Tolka Park in Drumcondra, capacity 6,450. They wear red and are known as the Reds, or simply Shels. They are one of the founder members of the League of Ireland, and one of only two clubs to have won both the Irish Cup, in the pre-partition all-Ireland competition, and the FAI Cup.
Recent seasons
Shelbourne won the League of Ireland First Division in 2021 and returned to the Premier Division in 2022. Damien Duff, appointed in November 2021, took them to fourth in 2023, which was enough for European football after Bohemians lost the FAI Cup final, and then to the title in 2024, sealed with a 1-0 win at Derry City on the final night, Harry Wood scoring five minutes from the end of the season. Shelbourne had started that season at 25/1.
Duff resigned on 22 June 2025 and Joey O'Brien succeeded him. Shels finished third in 2025 and qualified for Europe again, and reached the Conference League league phase for the first time in the club's history.
The 2026 season has been difficult. As of 9 August 2026 Shelbourne are fifth of ten with 34 points from 26 matches, 8 wins, 10 draws and 8 defeats, 34 goals scored and 36 conceded, twenty points behind Shamrock Rovers. Joey O'Brien left on 25 June 2026 after one year, Lorcan Fitzgerald took interim charge, and John Russell arrived from Sligo Rovers on 13 July 2026. Harry Wood is the leading scorer with ten.
Honours and landmarks
Shelbourne have won the League of Ireland fourteen times, most recently in 2024, and the First Division twice. They have won the FAI Cup seven times, the Irish Cup three times, the League of Ireland Cup once, the League of Ireland Shield eight times and the Leinster Senior Cup twenty-one times. They won the President of Ireland's Cup for the first time in February 2025, beating Drogheda United 2-0 at Tolka Park. On 14 January 2026 they signed defender Odhrán Casey from Cliftonville for what is recorded as a League of Ireland record transfer fee. The fee itself was not disclosed in the sources read here.

European record
Shelbourne first played in Europe in the 1962/63 European Cup, losing 0-2 at home to Sporting Lisbon at Dalymount Park in front of more than 20,000 and 1-5 in Lisbon. In the 1964/65 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup they drew 1-1 at Belenenses and 0-0 at home, won the toss for the venue of a play-off and won it 2-1, giving the League of Ireland its first significant European scalp. Atlético Madrid then beat them 1-0 in each leg.
Their high point came in 2004/05, when they became the first Irish club to reach the third qualifying round of the Champions League. They beat KR Reykjavík on away goals, then Hajduk Split 4-3 on aggregate, and were only stopped by Deportivo La Coruña, drawing 0-0 at Lansdowne Road in front of 25,000 before losing 3-0 in Spain. Dropping into the UEFA Cup, they lost 4-2 on aggregate to Lille. In 2005/06 they beat Glentoran 6-2 on aggregate, still a record aggregate win for a League of Ireland side in the European Cup, before losing to Steaua Bucharest, 0-0 at Tolka Park and 4-1 in Bucharest.
In 2025/26 Shelbourne beat Linfield in the Champions League first qualifying round, 1-0 at Tolka Park and 1-1 at Windsor Park, then lost to Qarabağ, 0-3 at home and 0-1 in Baku. In the Europa League third qualifying round they won 2-1 away at Rijeka through Sam Bone and John Martin, then lost the return 1-3 at Tolka Park with Rijeka scoring in the 90th minute. In the Conference League play-off they beat Linfield again, 3-1 at Tolka Park and 2-0 at Windsor Park, 5-1 on aggregate, to reach the league phase for the first time and become only the third Irish club to reach a European group or league stage. Home matches were played at Tallaght Stadium. Shels drew 0-0 with Häcken, lost 0-1 at Shkëndija, lost 0-1 at home to Drita with James Norris sent off after fifteen minutes, lost away at AZ Alkmaar, lost 0-3 at home to Crystal Palace in front of a record Tallaght crowd of 10,143, and drew 0-0 at Celje.
