FC Sion
Also written as Sion.
The club
FC Sion were founded in 1909 by Robert Gilliard and play at the Stade de Tourbillon in Sion, in the Valais, a ground opened in 1968 that now holds 14,283. The first team is operated by the company Olympique des Alpes SA. Christian Constantin has been the club's chairman and its dominant public figure for decades. The home kit is red and white. No nickname was established from the sources read here and none is stated.
Recent seasons
Sion were relegated from the Super League at the end of 2022/23; the length of the top-flight run that ended there was not confirmed from the sources read here. They went straight back up, sealing promotion with a 3-0 win over Schaffhausen on 20 May 2024 as Challenge League champions for the first time in the club's history, and have improved each year since. In 2025/26 they finished fourth on 63 points, behind Thun on 75, St Gallen on 70 and Lugano on 67, and ahead of Basel on 56. Because St Gallen won the 2025/26 Swiss Cup as well as finishing in the top three, the cup winners' European place was retained and the second Conference League berth passed down to fourth-placed Sion.
Honours and landmarks
Two Swiss championships, in 1991/92 and 1996/97. Thirteen Swiss Cups, a total that is central to the club's identity: Sion had never lost a domestic cup final until they were beaten by Basel in 2017.
Notable scorelines
No club record win or record defeat was established from the sources read here, and neither is stated rather than guessed. The most recent scoreline worth carrying is a 4-0 win over BATE Borisov at Tourbillon on 30 July 2026, which turned a 1-1 first leg into a 5-1 aggregate.
European record
Sion's high point in Europe is the 2015/16 Europa League, when they reached the group stage for the first time and went on to the round of 32, where they were eliminated by Braga 4-3 on aggregate.
The 2026/27 Conference League campaign began in the second qualifying round against BATE Borisov of Belarus. The first leg on 23 July 2026 was played on neutral ground in Azerbaijan and finished 1-1; Sion won the return at Tourbillon 4-0 on 30 July 2026 to take the tie 5-1. That put them into the third qualifying round against FC Noah of Armenia, a club that has played in each of the first two Conference League league phases. The first leg was at the Abovyan City Stadium on 6 August 2026 and finished 2-2. Helder Castro put Noah ahead from the penalty spot on 5 minutes, Winsley Boteli equalised on 13, Gor Manvelyan restored Noah's lead on 20 and Ylyas Chouaref levelled it on 57.
Quotes
No directly quoted material was confirmed from the sources read here. Remarks attributed to head coach Didier Tholot around the Noah tie were read only in paraphrase in secondary reporting, and the underlying Swiss articles could not be opened to check the exact words, so nothing is reproduced. The only verbatim published line confirmed is an administrative one from the club's own ticketing notice of 11 August 2026, "Le Stade de Tourbillon sera entierement configure en places assises", which is a club statement rather than a person speaking.
Right now (2026/27)
Didier Tholot is the head coach and Christian Constantin the chairman. Sion are back in Europe on the strength of fourth place and 63 points in the 2025/26 Super League. Their domestic results in the opening weeks of 2026/27 were not established from the sources read here.
The tie they are in right now is the third qualifying round of the Conference League against FC Noah. The first leg in Abovyan on 6 August 2026 finished 2-2, Sion twice pegging Noah back through Winsley Boteli on 13 minutes and Ylyas Chouaref on 57, after Helder Castro's fifth-minute penalty and Gor Manvelyan's goal on 20. The return is at the Stade de Tourbillon on 13 August 2026 and the club has configured the ground entirely for seated spectators, with the north stand sold out and the south stand given over to Noah's supporters. A Europa League play-off place is the prize; the Swiss press has noted that a favourable draw there could bring Ajax to Tourbillon.
