The club

The Spartans were founded in 1951 by former Edinburgh University players and play at Ainslie Park on Pilton Drive in north Edinburgh, a ground they moved into in November 2008 from their previous home at City Park. Ainslie Park holds 3,612, of which 534 are seated, and the playing surface is artificial. In January 2025 the ground was renamed the Vanloq Community Stadium under a sponsorship agreement. The team play in white shirts, red shorts and white socks. The club carry no separate nickname; they are referred to as Spartans, and the formal name takes the definite article.

Recent seasons

Spartans spent the first part of this run in the fifth tier. The 2020/21 Lowland League was curtailed by the pandemic and settled on a points-per-game basis: Spartans were eighth from 12 games with 18 points, in a season won by Kelty Hearts. They were fifth in 2021/22 with 66 points from 34 games, behind champions Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic. In 2022/23 they won the Lowland League with 79 points from 36 games, finishing ahead of Rangers B on 77 and Celtic B on 76, and then came through the pyramid play-offs into the SPFL.

Their first season in League Two, 2023/24, brought a third-place finish, 58 points from 36 games with 15 wins, 13 draws and eight defeats, in a division won by Stenhousemuir. They were fifth in 2024/25 with 52 points, Peterhead taking the title. In 2025/26 they were runners-up with 64 points from 18 wins, 10 draws and eight defeats, five behind champions East Kilbride, and they recorded the division's longest unbeaten run at 13 games. Mark Stowe was the League Two top scorer with 21 goals. In the promotion play-off semi-final they lost 2-0 away to third-placed Clyde on 5 May 2026 and drew 1-1 at home on 9 May, going out 3-1 on aggregate. They therefore begin 2026/27 in League Two for a fourth season.

Honours and landmarks

Spartans have won the Lowland League three times, in 2013/14, 2017/18 and 2022/23, and were runners-up in 2015/16. Before the Lowland League existed they won the East of Scotland League nine times, in 1971/72, 1983/84, 1996/97, 2001/02, 2003/04, 2004/05, 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11. Cup honours are the Lowland League Cup of 2016/17, the SFA South Region Challenge Cup in 2008/09, 2009/10, 2010/11 and 2022/23, the East of Scotland League Cup four times, the East of Scotland King Cup 12 times, the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup 10 times and the East of Scotland City Cup in 2004/05, 2005/06 and 2006/07.

The landmark that matters most is the 2023 promotion. Having won the Lowland League, Spartans beat Highland League champions Brechin City on penalties after a 3-3 draw, then beat Albion Rovers 2-1 on aggregate in the final, Blair Henderson's penalty settling a 1-0 leg, to become an SPFL club for the first time.

The other distinctive thing about Spartans is the structure around the club. Spartans Community Foundation, a registered Scottish charity (SC037598) and social enterprise based at 94 Pilton Drive, runs the site as a community clubhouse with 11-a-side, 7-a-side and 5-a-side pitches alongside the first-team ground. Its work is free youth work in North Edinburgh schools, alternative education provision at primary and secondary level, and health programmes including walking football and para-football. Spartans Youth Section and Spartans WFC, who play in the Scottish Women's Premier League at Ainslie Park, sit alongside it. The Foundation's stated aim is "changing lives in North Edinburgh through the power of people and sport".

Club records are a genuine gap. No record attendance, record win or record defeat is published in any source consulted, including Wikipedia and the Football Club History Database, and 11v11 blocks automated access. Treat all three as not established.

Notable scorelines

With no published record win or defeat, the usable historic result is the Scottish Cup run of 2003/04, the club's furthest, which ended in a 4-0 fourth-round defeat by Livingston in front of a full house of 3,000 at City Park. From the most recent campaign, the 1-1 home draw with Clyde on 9 May 2026 was the game that ended the promotion push.

Head-to-head notes

No all-time head-to-head records could be established for any of this season's opponents. Spartans do not publish them in an accessible form, and 11v11, the usual source, returns HTTP 403.

What can be said is that Spartans met eight of their nine League Two opponents in the same division last season: Clyde, Forfar Athletic, Stranraer, Elgin City, Annan Athletic, Stirling Albion, Dumbarton and Edinburgh City. Only Kelty Hearts are new to them at this level, having been relegated from League One after finishing tenth with 29 points in 2025/26. The most recent meaningful meeting is the play-off semi-final with Clyde in May 2026, described above. Stirling Albion beat Spartans 1-3 at Ainslie Park in the Premier Sports Cup on 14 July 2026. The Edinburgh City fixtures are the closest thing Spartans have to a derby, both clubs being Edinburgh sides, City playing at Meadowbank Stadium.

Right now (2026/27)

Douglas Samuel remains manager, in post since June 2012 and the longest-serving manager in the SPFL. As of July 2026 his record stands at 611 competitive matches, 348 wins, 96 draws and 167 defeats. No summer 2026 incomings or departures could be established, because the club site was unreachable and no other source consulted carried Spartans transfer news; this section should be filled in from the club before use.

The Premier Sports Cup went badly. In Group B, Spartans lost 1-2 at home to Arbroath on 11 July 2026, lost 1-3 at home to Stirling Albion on 14 July, lost 4-0 away to Dundee United on 21 July, and finished with a 2-0 win away to Montrose on 25 July. Three points from four games left them fifth and last in the group, which Dundee United won on goal difference from Montrose, and Spartans did not reach the last 16.

The League Two campaign begins away to Annan Athletic at Galabank on Saturday 1 August 2026.
