Stevenage

The club

Stevenage were founded in 1976, as Stevenage Borough, after the collapse of the earlier Stevenage Athletic. They play at Broadhall Way in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, known commercially as the Lamex Stadium, which holds 7,318. The club are nicknamed the Boro and play in red and white; the strip was red and white stripes historically, and settled into plain red shirts with white shorts from the 1980s.

Recent seasons

Stevenage were 23rd in League Two in 2019/20, on 22 points from the 36 games played before the pandemic ended the season early, and were spared relegation only because the National League's promotion process was not completed. They recovered to 14th in 2020/21 with 60 points, slipped to 21st in 2021/22 with 47, and then went up: second in League Two in 2022/23 with 85 points under Steve Evans. Their first season back in the third tier, 2023/24, brought ninth place and 71 points. Alex Revell took over in April 2024 and the club dropped to 14th with 57 points in 2024/25 before their best third-tier campaign yet in 2025/26, sixth with 75 points. That put them in the play-offs, where they lost both legs of the semi-final to Stockport County, 1-0 away and 2-0 at home, 3-0 on aggregate. 2026/27 is their fourth consecutive season in League One.

Honours and landmarks

Stevenage have never won a Football League title. Their championships are all from the non-league years: the Conference National in 1995/96 and 2009/10, the Isthmian League Premier Division in 1993/94, Isthmian Division One in 1991/92, Isthmian Division Two North in 1985/86 and 1990/91, and the United Counties League Division One in 1980/81. The 1995/96 Conference title did not bring promotion, the club's ground not meeting Football League criteria at the time. They won the FA Trophy twice, in 2006/07 and 2008/09, and the League Two play-offs in 2011, which took them into the third tier for the first time. The 2007 Trophy final, a 3-2 win over Kidderminster Harriers, was the first competitive final played at the rebuilt Wembley, in front of 53,262. That is the largest crowd the club have played in front of; a record attendance figure for Broadhall Way itself is not established from the sources read here. Ronnie Henry holds the appearance record with 502 across two spells, and Martin Gittings is the leading scorer with 217 goals in all competitions. Notable scorelines

Record win: 11-1 against British Timken Athletic in the United Counties League in December 1980. Record defeat: 0-8 against Charlton Athletic in the EFL Trophy in October 2018. Stevenage are best known nationally for FA Cup upsets. They beat Newcastle United 3-1 at Broadhall Way in the third round in 2010/11, the first time the club had beaten top-flight opposition, and went on to the fifth round in 2011/12, knocking out Reading before losing to Tottenham Hotspur in a replay. In the 2022/23 competition they won 2-1 at Villa Park against Aston Villa.

Head-to-head notes

No published all-time head-to-head records were found for Stevenage against any of their 2026/27 opponents; the club website's automated pages were not retrievable. The most recent meeting of consequence is with Stockport County, who put Stevenage out of the 2025/26 League One play-offs over two legs in May 2026 without conceding. Alex Revell remains manager, appointed in April 2024 and now into his third season. The summer business was modest and mostly free-agent led. Striker Josh Magennis joined on a free from Exeter City on 1 July 2026, forward Olly Sanderson arrived from Fulham the same day, and defensive midfielder Terry Taylor came in from Charlton Athletic, also on 1 July. Centre-back Terence Vancooten returned to the club from Burton Albion for an undisclosed fee on 25 July 2026, having played for Stevenage earlier in his career. Departures were largely out-of-contract players: goalkeeper Taye Ashby-Hammond to Barnet on 30 June, centre-backs Charlie Goode to Milton Keynes Dons and Dan Sweeney to AFC Wimbledon, midfielder Harvey White to Plymouth Argyle, and Ellis Bates to Aveley on 14 July.

Pre-season has been mixed: a goalless draw away to FC Andorra on 18 July 2026, a 5-0 home defeat by West Ham United on 22 July, and a 1-0 home win over Millwall on 25 July, with Colchester United at home on 1 August closing the programme. The competitive season begins with the EFL Cup first round away to Wycombe Wanderers on 7 August 2026, 19:45. The League One campaign opens away to Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium on 15 August 2026 at 3pm. In the EFL Trophy, Stevenage have been drawn with Leicester City, Walsall and Fulham under-21s.
