Tranmere Rovers

The club
Tranmere Rovers were founded in 1884 as Belmont FC and took their present name in 1885. They play at Prenton Park in Birkenhead, on the Wirral across the Mersey from Liverpool; capacity is 16,567. They have worn an all-white strip with blue trim since 1962 and are known as the Superwhites, or simply Rovers.
Recent seasons
Tranmere were relegated from League One in 2019/20, placed 21st of 23 on the points-per-game calculation used when the season was curtailed, and have been in League Two for seven seasons since. They were seventh in 2020/21 with 73 points and lost the play-off semi-final, ninth in 2021/22 with 75, 12th in 2022/23 with 58, 16th in 2023/24 with 57, and 20th in 2024/25 with 51. The 2025/26 season was worse again: 21st with 41 points from 46 games, ten wins, 11 draws and 25 defeats, 54 goals scored and 79 conceded. That was two points clear of Harrogate Town, who went down in 23rd with 39. Andy Crosby was sacked as manager on 4 March 2026, Andy Parkinson took interim charge, and Pete Wild was appointed on 10 March for the rest of the season and kept the club up.
The club also has recent experience of dropping out of the league entirely: three seasons in non-league from 2015 to 2018, ending a 94-year unbroken run in the Football League, followed by back-to-back play-off promotions in 2018 and 2019.
Honours and landmarks
Tranmere have never won a major trophy. They were Division Three North champions in 1937/38, won the Associate Members' Cup in 1990, and have twice won the EFL Trophy, in 2018 and 2019, the latter pair being the play-off promotions rather than the cup itself. Wikipedia describes the 1990s as the most successful period in the club's history. They reached the League Cup final in 2000, losing 2-1 to Leicester City in the last League Cup final played at the old Wembley: Matt Elliott put Leicester ahead, Clint Hill was sent off for a second booking, David Kelly equalised for ten-man Tranmere and Elliott scored again three minutes later.
Record attendance is 24,424 against Stoke City in an FA Cup tie at Prenton Park; Wikipedia gives the year as 1972 in one place and 1970 in another and the club site was not readable to settle it. Harold Bell holds the outstanding club record, 459 consecutive league appearances between 1946 and 1955. Ian Muir is the leading scorer with 180 goals across eleven seasons. Bunny Bell scored 40 goals in 1935/36. No record transfer fee paid or received was established.
Notable scorelines
Record victory: 13-4 against Oldham Athletic in Division Three North on Boxing Day 1935, in which Bunny Bell scored nine. The aggregate of 17 goals was still a Football League record as of 2011. No record defeat was established from the sources available.
Head-to-head notes
Tranmere do not publish accessible all-time head-to-head records and none was established for any 2026/27 opponent. One connection is worth noting. Shrewsbury Town, the first league opponents, finished 19th in League Two in 2025/26 with 49 points, two places above Tranmere, and are also Tranmere's first EFL Trophy group opponents on 22 September. Tranmere sold striker Josh Davison to Shrewsbury on 30 June, so the two clubs meet at least three times before Christmas with a recent transfer between them.

Darrell Clarke was appointed manager on 26 May 2026 on a two-year contract. He had been sacked by Bristol Rovers on 13 December 2025 after a tenth consecutive league defeat, a club record, so he arrives with something to prove at both ends.
The rebuild has been substantial. Winger Tom Ince joined from Watford on 27 July, easily the highest-profile arrival. Midfielder Tom Conlon came from Oldham Athletic on 1 July and striker Courtney Baker-Richardson from Newport County on 30 July. Defenders Jacob Slater from Brighton and Hove Albion, Joel Senior from Bristol Rovers and Jack McEvilly from Burnley also signed.
Out went striker Josh Davison to Shrewsbury Town on 30 June, defensive midfielder Richard Smallwood to Bristol Rovers, forward Harvey Saunders to Northampton Town and forward Kristian Dennis to Altrincham.
Pre-season was played mostly locally: 3-0 against Bootle on 11 July, 2-0 against Blackpool on 18 July, 3-0 against a PFA side on 24 July, then a 3-1 defeat at Altrincham on 28 July.
The season starts earlier than for most clubs, with the EFL Cup preliminary round against Rochdale on 1 August 2026; the winner meets Bradford City at Valley Parade in the first round on 8 August. The League Two campaign opens at home to Shrewsbury Town at Prenton Park on Saturday 15 August 2026 at 3pm. The EFL Trophy group is Shrewsbury Town at home on 22 September, Stockport County on 10 November and Everton under-21s on 24 November.
