The club

The current Vancouver Whitecaps FC was founded on 18 March 2009 and joined Major League Soccer as its 17th team, kicking off on 19 March 2011 with a 4-2 win over Toronto FC in which Eric Hassli scored the franchise's first MLS goal. The feed's short name for the club is Vancouver.

The Whitecaps name is not new to the city, and this is not the same club as either of its predecessors. The original Vancouver Whitecaps played in the North American Soccer League from a founding on 11 December 1973 until the franchise folded in 1984, winning Soccer Bowl '79 with a win over the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Giants Stadium on 8 September 1979 in front of a crowd of 50,699, a squad that featured Alan Ball, Ruud Krol and Bruce Grobbelaar alongside British Columbian players Bob and Sam Lenarduzzi, Buzz Parsons and Bruce Wilson. After the NASL folded, a Vancouver side played on as the Vancouver 86ers from 1986 to 2001 in various minor leagues, then took the Whitecaps name back in 2001 and competed in the USSF Division 2 Professional League until 2010. The current MLS club is a third use of the name, sometimes described as a phoenix club, and neither the 1974-1984 NASL Whitecaps nor the 2001-2010 USL Whitecaps should be confused with the present-day MLS franchise.

Vancouver play at BC Place, an indoor stadium that opened in 1983 and was renovated between 2009 and 2011 to add a retractable roof; capacity for soccer is set at 22,120 of the stadium's 54,500 total, and the surface is FIFA two-star certified artificial turf. The club spent most of its inaugural 2011 season at the temporary 27,500-seat Empire Field while BC Place was under renovation, playing its last match there, a 3-1 loss to Seattle Sounders FC, on 24 September 2011. Predecessor clubs played at Swangard Stadium. The team trains at the National Soccer Development Centre at the University of British Columbia, a 32.5 million dollar facility that opened on 22 September 2017.

Jesper Sørensen has been head coach since being hired on 14 January 2025, replacing Vanni Sartini. Axel Schuster is the sporting director. The ownership group includes Greg Kerfoot, Steve Luczo, chairman Jeff Mallett and Steve Nash.

Recent seasons

Vancouver made the playoffs in 2012, becoming the first Canadian team to reach the MLS postseason. The 2025 season was the club's most successful in the MLS era: 63 points from 34 matches, 18 wins, 9 draws and 7 losses, 66 goals scored and 38 conceded, finishing second in the Western Conference and fifth in the overall Supporters' Shield standings. Honours and landmarks

Vancouver have won the Canadian Championship five times: 2015, beating Montreal 4-2 on aggregate for the club's first title; 2022, beating Toronto FC 5-3 on penalties; 2023, beating CF Montréal 2-1; 2024, beating Toronto FC 4-2 on penalties; and 2025, beating Vancouver FC 4-2 for a fourth consecutive title. Vancouver beat the Philadelphia Union 7-0 at home on 13 September 2025, a result that tied for the largest margin of victory anywhere in MLS that season. In the 2025 playoffs the club beat FC Dallas 3-0 at BC Place in the first leg of a best-of-three first round series on 26 October, drew the away leg 1-1 on 1 November and won the shootout 4-2 to take the series 2-0; beat Los Angeles FC 2-2 after extra time, 4-3 on penalties, in the conference semi-final at BC Place on 22 November in front of an MLS-era record crowd of 53,957; and beat San Diego FC 3-1 away in the conference final on 29 November to win the club's first Western Conference title. The run ended with a 3-1 loss to Inter Miami CF in the MLS Cup final at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on 6 December 2025, Ali Ahmed scoring Vancouver's goal, and with a 5-0 loss to Cruz Azul in the Concacaf Champions Cup final on 1 June 2025. On the Cascadia Cup, Vancouver beat the Portland Timbers 4-1 on the final day of the 2016 regular season to win that year's title. Vancouver's principal rivalries are with Seattle Sounders FC and the Portland Timbers, together forming the Cascadia rivalry that predates MLS and is fought for annually through the Cascadia Cup, a trophy created by supporters of the three clubs in 2004.
