Víkingur Gøta
Also written as Vikingur, Vikingur Gota.
The club
This is Víkingur Gøta of the Faroe Islands, not to be confused with any other club carrying the Vikingur or Viking name. Knattspyrnufélagið Víkingur, commonly Víkingur Reykjavík, is a separate Icelandic club based in the Icelandic capital and is carried elsewhere in this corpus as its own entry; the two clubs have never met and share nothing beyond the name. Viking Fotballklubb of Stavanger, Norway, usually written Viking or Viking Stavanger, is a third and again entirely unrelated club. This dossier is for none of those: it is for the Faroese side based in Norðragøta on the island of Eysturoy, the club that played Stjarnan of Iceland home and away in the first qualifying round of the 2026/27 UEFA Conference League in July 2026.
Víkingur was formed on 14 January 2008 through the merger of two clubs from the village of Gøta on Eysturoy: GÍ Gøta, then in the Faroese top flight, and Leirvík ÍF, then in the second tier. The name honours Tróndur í Gøtu, a Viking-age chieftain associated with the area roughly a thousand years ago. The merged club made its Vodafonedeildin debut on 31 March 2008 with a 4-1 win over B68 Toftir.
The club plays at Sarpugerði Stadium in Norðragøta, a ground holding 1,600 spectators, 440 of them seated. Home kit is white and red with red shorts; the away kit is white with white shorts. The current head coach is Jóhan Petur Poulsen, in charge since September 2020. The chairman is Brandur Jacobsen.
Recent seasons
Víkingur finished runners-up in the Faroese Premier League in both 2022 and 2023, behind KÍ Klaksvík, before winning the title themselves in 2024. In 2025 they finished fourth of ten. League points totals for these seasons were not established from the sources read here.
Honours and landmarks
Víkingur have won the Faroe Islands Premier League three times, in 2016, 2017 and 2024. They have won the Faroese Cup six times, in 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2022, and the Faroese Super Cup five times, in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. The 2014/15 UEFA Europa League run, reaching the third qualifying round, was the first time a Faroese club had come through two rounds of a UEFA club competition.
Notable scorelines
Víkingur's biggest recorded European win is 6-2 on aggregate over Trepça'89 of Kosovo in the first qualifying round of the 2017/18 Champions League. Their heaviest European defeats are a 10-0 aggregate loss to FC Gomel of Belarus in the 2012/13 Champions League qualifying, 6-0 at home and 4-0 away, and a 7-0 aggregate loss to Beşiktaş in the 2010/11 Europa League, 0-4 at home and 0-3 away. The club's all-time domestic record win and record defeat were not established from the sources read here.
European record
Across their European history to date Víkingur have played 42 matches in UEFA competition, with 9 wins, 8 draws and 25 losses, scoring 33 goals and conceding 88. Most campaigns have ended in the first or second qualifying round against stronger opposition from larger footballing nations. The exception was 2014/15, when the club beat Tromsø of Norway 2-1 on aggregate and FC Inter Turku of Finland 2-1 to reach the Europa League third qualifying round, the deepest run in the club's history. More recently they beat Liepāja of Latvia 3-1 in 2024/25 Conference League qualifying before losing 1-7 on aggregate to Gent.
In the first qualifying round of the 2026/27 UEFA Conference League, Víkingur were drawn against Stjarnan of Iceland. Víkingur drew 2-2 at home at Sarpugerði Stadium, then lost the away leg 1-3 in Iceland, going out 5-3 on aggregate. The first legs of this qualifying round were played across 7, 8 and 9 July 2026 and the second legs across 14, 15 and 16 July 2026; the exact date on which each of the two Víkingur-Stjarnan legs was played was not established from the sources read here. Stjarnan progressed to face Ilves of Finland in the second qualifying round.
Head-to-head notes
The July 2026 Conference League tie is the only recorded meeting between Víkingur and Stjarnan found in the sources read here; there is no earlier head-to-head history between the two clubs to draw on.
Right now (2026/27)
Jóhan Petur Poulsen remains head coach. Víkingur's 2026/27 European campaign ended at the first hurdle, beaten 5-3 on aggregate by Stjarnan of Iceland in the Conference League first qualifying round in July 2026, a 2-2 home draw followed by a 1-3 defeat away. The club's league position in the 2026 Faroese Premier League season, and any summer transfer business, were not established from the sources read here.
