Watford

The club

Watford were founded in 1881 out of the amalgamation of West Herts and Watford St Mary's. They have played at Vicarage Road since 1922, first as tenants and then as owners: the club bought the freehold in 2004 after a supporter-backed campaign. Capacity is 22,200. The early nickname was "The Brewers", after Benskins Brewery, which became "The Blues" in the 1920s; when the club adopted gold and black in 1959 supporters chose "The Hornets", and that has stuck. The kit has been yellow and black with red detailing since 1976.

Recent seasons

Watford have been a Championship club since 2022 and were a yo-yo club before that. They were relegated from the Premier League in 2019/20, finishing 19th with 34 points, went straight back up as Championship runners-up in 2020/21 with 91 points, and came straight back down again in 2021/22, 19th with 23 points. Since then the finishes have flattened out: 11th in 2022/23 with 63 points, 15th in 2023/24 with 56, 14th in 2024/25 with 57, and 16th in 2025/26 with 57 points from 46 games, 14 wins, 15 draws and 17 defeats, 53 goals scored and 65 conceded. Five seasons in the division without threatening either end of it. The club has become better known for the rate at which it changes head coaches than for anything happening on the pitch.

Honours and landmarks

Watford have never won a major trophy. Their highest finish is First Division runners-up in 1982/83, behind Liverpool, in the club's first season in the top flight. They were Second Division champions in 1977/78 and again in 1997/98, and Championship runners-up in 2014/15 and 2020/21. They have reached two FA Cup finals, losing to Everton in 1984 and losing 6-0 to Manchester City in 2019. The rise under Graham Taylor is the story most worth reaching for: Watford began the 1982/83 season with four wins from five and had gone from the bottom division of the Football League to the top of the First Division inside seven years.

Record attendance is 34,099 against Manchester United in an FA Cup fourth round tie on 3 February 1969. Luther Blissett holds both the appearance record, 503 games between 1976 and 1992, and the scoring record with 186 goals. Record fee paid is £40,000,000 to Rennes for Ismaila Sarr on 8 August 2019; record fee received is £50,000,000 from Everton for Richarlison on 24 July 2018, which for a club of Watford's size is an unusual pair of numbers to have on the books.

Notable scorelines

Record victory: 10-1 against Lowestoft Town in 1899. Record defeat: 0-10 against Durham City in 1905. Both predate the club's Football League membership. The heaviest defeat a current supporter would name is the 2019 FA Cup final, 6-0 to Manchester City at Wembley.

Head-to-head notes

Watford do not publish all-time head-to-head records, and no published all-time record was established for any 2026/27 opponent. The two immediate fixtures are worth noting for context rather than history. The EFL Cup first round tie at home is against the winner of York City v Crawley Town, both fourth tier or below; Crawley finished 22nd in League Two in 2025/26 with 40 points. The league opener is at home to Southampton, who finished fourth in the Championship in 2025/26 with 80 points but were disqualified from the play-offs for unauthorised filming of rivals' training sessions, so they arrive at Vicarage Road with a grievance and a squad built for promotion.

Four players have come in. Right-back Omar Traoré joined from Udinese on a free transfer on 16 July. Two centre-forwards arrived on the same day, 24 July: Iker Bravo for £3,400,000 and Luca Kjerrumgaard for an undisclosed fee. Goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia signed from Bologna on 31 July for an undisclosed fee.

Departures have been steady rather than dramatic. Goalkeeper Nathan Baxter went to Leyton Orient on 3 July for an undisclosed fee. Attacking midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze returned to Udinese on 6 July. Defensive midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru joined Aris Thessaloniki on 22 July for £425,000. Winger Tom Ince dropped to Tranmere Rovers in League Two on 27 July, a move recorded on Tranmere's side of the transaction.

Pre-season was mixed and mostly local. Watford lost 2-1 at Boreham Wood on 11 July and drew 2-2 at Barnet on 15 July, then beat Hansa Rostock 3-0 at Vicarage Road on 25 July and lost 1-0 at home to Fiorentina on 29 July.

The season starts with the EFL Cup first round at home on Saturday 8 August 2026 at 3pm, against York City or Crawley Town. The Championship campaign opens at home to Southampton on Sunday 16 August 2026 at 1.30pm.
