York City
Also written as York.
The club
York City were founded in 1922 and play at the York Community Stadium, capacity 8,500, which they moved into in January 2021 after 88 years at Bootham Crescent. They are the Minstermen, after York Minster, and play in red.
Recent seasons
York spent 2020/21 and 2021/22 in National League North, winning the play-offs in 2022 to return to the National League. They were a National League club in 2022/23, 2023/24 and 2024/25, and won the division in 2025/26 with 108 points from 46 games, 33 wins, 9 draws and 4 defeats, 114 goals scored and 41 conceded. Both the points total, in a three-points-for-a-win season, and the goals tally are club records. Promotion was secured on 25 April 2026 with a 1-1 draw against Rochdale, Josh Stones equalising in the 103rd minute. The season included a nine-match winning run and a 24-match unbeaten run. Ollie Pearce scored 34 league goals and 35 in all competitions, the most in the division. Average home league attendance was 6,650, with a high of 8,219 against Yeovil Town and a low of 4,952 against Gateshead. York went out of the FA Cup in the first round, losing 3-2 to Barnsley, and out of the FA Trophy in the third round on penalties to Clitheroe.
The season had an unsettled start: Adam Hinshelwood departed on 28 August 2025 after four matches, and Stuart Maynard was appointed the same day and won the title. Rochdale, who finished second on 106 points and went up through the play-offs, come up with York into League Two.
Honours and landmarks
York's one Football League title is the Fourth Division championship of 1983/84, won with 101 points, which made them the first Football League club to reach a three-figure points total in a season. They have won the FA Trophy twice, beating Newport County 2-0 in 2011/12 and Macclesfield Town 3-2 in 2016/17, and were runners-up in 2008/09. They won the Conference Premier play-offs in 2012, the National League North play-offs in 2022 and the National League in 2025/26. Earlier promotions came in 1958/59, 1964/65, 1970/71 and 1973/74, with a Third Division play-off win in 1993.
The club's best cup run is the FA Cup semi-final of 1954/55, reached as a third-tier side. York drew 1-1 with Newcastle United at Hillsborough and lost the replay 2-0 at Roker Park, becoming the first third-tier club to play in an FA Cup semi-final replay. In January 1985 they beat First Division Arsenal 1-0 at Bootham Crescent with an 89th-minute penalty.
York left the Football League in 2003/04 after 75 years, finishing bottom of the Third Division, returned in 2012, and were relegated again in 2015/16 after finishing bottom of League Two. Record attendance is 28,123 against Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup in March 1938, at Bootham Crescent. Norman Wilkinson is the record goalscorer with 143 and Barry Jackson holds the appearance record with 539. The record fee received is £950,000 for Richard Cresswell in 1999.
Notable scorelines
Record win: 9-1 against Southport in 1957. Record defeat: 0-12 against Chester City in 1936. The record cup defeat is 0-7 to Liverpool in the 1985 FA Cup replay that followed the win over Arsenal. In the 2025/26 title season York won 5-0 against both Carlisle United and Braintree Town, and lost to Solihull Moors and Scunthorpe United.
Head-to-head notes
No all-time head-to-head records could be established for any 2026/27 League Two opponent. York City do not publish opponent-by-opponent records in a form that can be fetched, and the usual third-party source blocks automated access. The only recent competitive meeting with a current divisional rival that is documented here is the 1-1 draw with Rochdale on 25 April 2026 that confirmed promotion.
Right now (2026/27)
Stuart Maynard was sacked on 26 July 2026, the club citing a difference in direction and vision, three months after winning the National League. Scott Lindsey was appointed head coach on 27 July 2026.
The summer rebuild was substantial. Striker Dipo Akinyemi joined from Derry City on 15 June, midfielder Frankie Maguire from Boston United in the same window, centre-back Zak Johnson from Sunderland on 26 June, and then on 1 July centre-backs Charlie McArthur from Newcastle United and Zech Medley from Fleetwood Town, and midfielders Arthur Read from Colchester United and Mark Shelton from Barnet. Right-back Jack Hunt signed from Wigan Athletic on 17 July and goalkeeper Alfie McNally arrived on loan from Fulham on 20 July. Malachi Fagan-Walcott was sold to Heart of Midlothian for £750,000; Tyler Cordner, Leone Gravata and Callum Howe were among those released.
Pre-season brought a 4-2 defeat at Pickering Town, a 2-1 win over Barnsley on 11 July, a 5-1 defeat to Sunderland and a 2-2 draw with Al-Ettifaq. York begin competitively at home to Crawley Town in the EFL Cup preliminary round on 3 August 2026, with a first-round tie against Watford on 8 August for the winners. Their first League Two fixture, and their first Football League match in a decade, is at home to Bristol Rovers on 15 August 2026.
