The club

Zimbru Chișinău were founded on 16 May 1947 in Chișinău, then in the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic, as Dinamo Chișinău. The club changed name several times in the Soviet period, playing at various points as Burevestnik, Moldova, Avântul and Nistru before settling on Zimbru, a Romanian word for the European bison, or wisent. The playing colours have been yellow and green since the club's foundation, and the team is nicknamed Galben-verzii, the Yellow-Greens.

Zimbru Chișinău is a separate club from two others that appear in this same corpus of Moldovan dossiers and should not be confused with it. Milsami Orhei is a different club, based in the town of Orhei rather than the capital. Petrocub Hîncești is likewise a different club, based in Hîncești, and is currently one of the strongest sides in Moldova, having finished top of the 2025-26 Moldovan Liga as champions while Zimbru finished third. The club plays home matches at the Zimbru Stadium in the Botanica sector of Chișinău, which opened in 2006, has a capacity of 10,104 and a natural grass pitch. As of the sources read here the head coach is the Ukrainian Oleksandr Poklonskyi, the president is fellow Ukrainian Andriy Semenchuk, and the club is owned by the Moldovan businessman Nicolae Ciornîi. Recent seasons

Zimbru finished eighth in the Moldovan top flight in 2020-21 and seventh in 2021-22. Since then the club has settled into a run of third-place finishes: third in 2022-23 with 31 points from 24 matches (seven wins, ten draws, seven losses); third again in 2023-24 with 42 points from 24 matches (13 wins, three draws, eight losses); third in 2024-25 with 45 points from 24 matches (14 wins, three draws, seven losses); and third once more in 2025-26, this time with 62 points from 31 matches (18 wins, eight draws, five losses). That 2025-26 campaign was played in two phases, with Zimbru second after Phase I on 44 points (13 wins, five draws, three losses, 52 goals for and 21 against) before a Phase II return of 32 points from ten matches (five wins, three draws, two losses, 18 for and 11 against) settled the final placing at third. Dzianis Kazlouski was the club's top scorer in 2025-26 with 20 league goals. The club has remained continuously in the Moldovan top flight since the league's founding in 1992 and has not fallen into a lower division.

Honours and landmarks

Zimbru Chișinău are, by title count, the second most successful club in the history of Moldovan football's top flight. The club won the league championship eight times: in the league's inaugural 1992 season, then in 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95 and 1995-96 to take all five of the competition's first seasons, and again in 1997-98, 1998-99 and 1999-2000. According to the league's all-time table, Zimbru have won 535 of their 1,009 top-flight matches, drawn 230 and lost 244, with five further runner-up finishes and eight podium finishes in total.

In the Moldovan Cup, Zimbru have won six times: 1996-97, 1997-98, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2006-07 and 2013-14. That total ranks second all-time behind Sheriff Tiraspol's 14 wins. The club also won the Moldovan Super Cup once, in 2014. Before Moldovan independence, Zimbru spent 11 seasons in the Soviet Top League between 1956 and 1983, their best finish being sixth of twelve teams in 1956, and reached the quarter-finals of the Soviet Cup in 1963.

Notable scorelines

The 1996-97 Moldovan Cup final against Nistru Otaci finished 0-0 after extra time, with Zimbru winning 7-6 on penalties. The 1997-98 final was won 1-0 against Constructorul Chișinău. Both of Zimbru's most recent cup triumphs came against Sheriff Tiraspol, the country's dominant club: the 2003-04 final was won 2-1, and the 2013-14 final 3-1.

In European competition, Zimbru's record win was a 10-0 aggregate victory over the Irish side St Patrick's Athletic in the 1999-2000 UEFA Cup qualifying rounds. Domestically in the modern era, the club recorded a 7-0 home win over Politehnica UTM on 3 August 2025 during the 2025-26 league season. At the other end of the ledger, Zimbru lost 0-9 on aggregate to Fenerbahçe in the second qualifying round of the 2023-24 Europa Conference League, split 0-4 away and 0-5 at home, the heaviest European defeat found in the sources read here. Zimbru's best-remembered European run came in the 1999-2000 UEFA Cup, when the club beat St Patrick's Athletic of Ireland 10-0 on aggregate and then Dinamo Tbilisi of Georgia 3-2 on aggregate to reach the first round proper, where they lost 0-3 on aggregate to Tottenham Hotspur. Zimbru made further UEFA Cup and Europa League appearances across the following years, including ties against PSV Eindhoven, Sparta Prague and Hertha Berlin, though the individual scores of those matches were not established from the sources read here.

In the more recent Conference League era, Zimbru's qualifying campaigns have followed a similar pattern: a win or a competitive tie in the first qualifying round followed by elimination in the second. In 2023-24 they beat La Fiorita of San Marino 2-1 on aggregate (1-0 at home, 1-1 away) in the first qualifying round, then lost 0-9 on aggregate to Fenerbahçe of Turkey in the second. In 2024-25 they went out in the second qualifying round to Ararat-Armenia, losing 1-6 on aggregate (0-3 away, 1-3 at home). Head-to-head notes

Zimbru's principal rivalry, and by common description the biggest fixture in Moldovan football, is with Sheriff Tiraspol, a rivalry that developed into "the Moldovan El Clásico" as Sheriff rose to dominance in Moldovan football from the late 1990s onward. The two clubs have met in Moldovan Cup finals on at least two occasions in the period covered here, with Zimbru winning both: 2-1 in the 2003-04 final and 3-1 in the 2013-14 final.
