Carlisle United
The club
Carlisle United Football Club are a club from Carlisle, Cumbria, England, nicknamed the Cumbrians and the Blues, with supporters known as the Blue Army. The club is not Carlisle City or any other Carlisle side, and is not Carlisle United of any other country. Wikipedia traces the club to Shaddongate United, first reported in 1896, and gives the Carlisle United name and an official founding date of 1904, with entry to the Lancashire Combination the following year.
They have played at Brunton Park since 1909. Wikipedia's infobox gives a capacity of 17,949 and its stadium section 18,202, and the two figures were not reconciled in the sources read here. The colours are traditionally blue with white and red detail, and the badge draws on the city's coat of arms, including two wyverns. Rob Elliot is listed as head coach in the Wikipedia infobox; the history section read ends with Mark Hughes becoming head coach in February 2025, so when Elliot took over was not established from the sources read here.
Recent seasons
Carlisle were 20th in League Two in 2021-22, then fifth in 2022-23 and won the play-off final to gain promotion to League One. They finished 24th in 2023-24 and were relegated. In 2024-25 they were relegated to the National League with a game remaining; the final position was not stated in the sources read here. In 2025-26 they finished third of 24 in the National League.
Honours and landmarks

The full honours list was not in the portion of the page read. Wikipedia quotes Bill Shankly describing Carlisle's rise to the top flight as the greatest feat in the history of the game.
Notable scorelines
In the FA Cup third round in 1977-78 Carlisle drew 1-1 at home with Manchester United and lost the replay 4-2 at Old Trafford. The record defeat was not established from the sources read here.
European record
No European competition proper. The club's only continental-style fixtures were in the 1971-72 Anglo-Italian Cup, where they beat A.S. Roma 3-2 in Rome in June 1972.

The only quotation found is Bill Shankly's remark, above, as reported by Wikipedia. Nothing else was confirmed from the sources read here.
Right now (2026-27 season)
Carlisle play in the National League, the fifth tier. A fan-site table, with no update time, had them eighth with 26 points from 16 games. Recent results listed were a 4-2 win at Altrincham on 31 October 2026, a 3-0 home win over Harrogate Town on 28 October, a 2-1 win at Solihull Moors on 24 October and a 0-0 home draw with Kidderminster Harriers on 10 October. The fan-site page did not name the manager and showed only headlines saying Rob Elliot was lined up to replace Mark Hughes.
In the FA Cup they beat Tamworth 2-1 at home on 17 October 2026. They are drawn at home to Salford City in the first round proper, in the weekend of Saturday 7 November 2026 with a 15:00 kick-off on the club page; one header on that page labelled the tie away, which conflicts with the draw listing that has Carlisle at home. Summer transfer business was not established from the sources read here.
