RC Celta de Vigo
Also written as Celta de Vigo.
The club
Real Club Celta de Vigo was formed on 23 August 1923 through the merger of two existing Vigo clubs, Real Vigo Sporting and Real Fortuna, an idea championed by the sports writer Manuel de Castro under the motto "All by and for Vigo" as the city sought a single, stronger team capable of competing with the dominant Basque sides of the era. The club's first president was Manuel Bárcena de Andrés, Count of Torre Cedeira, and the name Celta refers to the Celtic peoples who once inhabited Galicia.
The club played at the Campo de Coia from its early years before moving to its permanent home, Balaídos, which opened on 30 December 1928 after a group of Vigo businessmen bought the land in 1924 and diverted the Lagares river to build it. The stadium, now known for sponsorship purposes as Estadio Abanca-Balaídos, has a capacity of 24,870.
The head coach is Claudio Giráldez, a Galician who came up through Celta's own academy and youth coaching staff before being promoted to first-team charge; he has held the job continuously since taking over during the 2023/24 season. The current captain is Iago Aspas, the Vigo-born forward who returned to his home-town club in 2015 and became both its record appearance-maker and record goalscorer. The club president is Marián Mouriño, who took over in late 2023 and is the first woman to hold the post.
Recent seasons
Celta have spent recent seasons as a mid-table La Liga club with occasional relegation battles either side of them. In 2024/25 they finished 7th under Giráldez with 55 points from 38 matches, 16 wins, 7 draws and 15 defeats, a run that included a 3-1 home win over Valencia, a 2-0 win over Real Sociedad and away draws at Barcelona (2-2) and Real Betis (2-2), and that finish carried them into the 2025/26 UEFA Europa League. In 2025/26 they improved to 6th with 54 points from 14 wins, 12 draws and 12 defeats, scoring 53 and conceding 48, a finish good enough to send them back into the Europa League league phase for 2026/27. Their best-ever La Liga finish remains 4th, achieved in 2002/03 and again, in the competition's earlier Primera División era, in 1947/48.
Honours and landmarks
Celta de Vigo have never won the Copa del Rey. They have reached the final three times without winning it: in 1948 as Celta de Vigo Copa del Generalísimo runners-up, in 1994 when they lost 5-4 on penalties to Real Zaragoza after a goalless final at the Vicente Calderón, and in 2001 when they lost 3-1 to Real Zaragoza again. Their honours at national level were not otherwise established from the sources read here beyond promotions from the Segunda División, including the 2003/04 title that took them back to the top flight after their first relegation.
Iago Aspas holds the club's all-time appearance and goalscoring records; by early 2026 he had passed 530 official appearances, matching a mark set decades earlier by Manolo, "the Great Captain," and had scored more than 220 goals for the club, also topping 169 in La Liga alone. The club's most celebrated period domestically for individual honours came in 1947/48, when the forward Pahiño won the Pichichi Trophy with 21 goals in 22 games before moving to Real Madrid.
Notable scorelines
Celta's record league win is 10-1 at home to Gimnàstic de Tarragona on 23 October 1949. Their biggest away wins are both 6-1, at Las Palmas on 6 October 1957 and at Athletic Bilbao on 24 March 2002. Their heaviest defeat is 0-10 away to Athletic Bilbao on 11 January 1942. In Europe, the club beat Benfica 7-0 at Balaídos in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup round of 32, winning the tie 8-1 on aggregate, and beat Juventus 4-0 at home in the last 16 of the same competition to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit and go through 4-1 on aggregate, a result still remembered locally as one of the club's greatest European nights.
European record
Celta first made a real mark in Europe in the late 1990s and early 2000s, a period the Spanish press nicknamed "EuroCelta." In the 1998/99 UEFA Cup, built around players such as Alexander Mostovoi, Valery Karpin, Haim Revivo and Claude Makélélé, they beat FC Argeș Pitești, Aston Villa and then Liverpool 3-2 on aggregate (3-1 at home, 0-1 away) in the last 16, before losing to Olympique de Marseille in the quarter-finals on away goals after a 2-2 aggregate draw. The following season, 1999/2000, they went further still, beating Lausanne Sports and Aris Thessaloniki, then Benfica 8-1 on aggregate and Juventus 4-1 on aggregate, before losing to Racing Lens in the quarter-finals, drawing 0-0 at home and losing 2-1 away.
Celta reached the UEFA Champions League for the only time in 2003/04 after their best-ever league finish, and went out in the round of 16 to Arsenal, winning the first leg 3-2 at Balaídos before losing 2-0 at Highbury, Arsenal going through 5-2 on aggregate.
More recently, Celta reached the semi-finals of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League, their run ended by Manchester United, who won 1-0 at Balaídos in the first leg and drew 1-1 at Old Trafford, Facundo Roncaglia scoring a late Celta goal in the second leg that was not enough to prevent a 2-1 aggregate defeat.
Celta returned to continental competition in 2025/26 after their 2024/25 La Liga finish, playing in the UEFA Europa League. They advanced through the new competition's February knockout play-off round against PAOK, winning 3-1 on aggregate after a 1-0 second-leg win, then beat Lyon in the round of 16, before losing to Freiburg in the quarter-finals: beaten 3-0 away in the first leg and 3-1 at home in the second, Williot Swedberg scoring a late consolation, going out 6-1 on aggregate. Freiburg went on to reach their first-ever Europa League semi-final. Celta's exact position in the 2025/26 Europa League league phase and full route to the knockout play-off round were not established in full detail from the sources read here.
Quotes
Iago Aspas, on why he returned to and stayed at his home-town club: "I came home to be happy, to have playing time, to be with my people. I feel loved here." Asked in February 2026 whether he was considering retirement, he said: "I don't know. As you know, I haven't set a date. It will depend on how I feel."
Claudio Giráldez, after Celta's winless start to 2026/27 and with the visit of Málaga bearing down on 13 September 2026, said the team's form at Balaídos had to improve, arguing the football had "many positive signs" but that this was not enough while results at home kept slipping away. After that match, in which Aspas suffered the thigh injury that would rule him out of the trip to Cyprus, Giráldez criticised the scheduling of a 2pm kick-off in temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius, saying: "Estoy convencido de que Iago Aspas no se habría lesionado en otras circunstancias" (I am convinced Iago Aspas would not have been injured in other circumstances), adding that it was the team's sixth match in three weeks and that fixture congestion combined with the heat created a real injury risk for his players.
Right now (2026/27)
Claudio Giráldez remains head coach. Celta have made a poor start to the La Liga season: after six matches they had taken four points from two draws and four defeats, with no wins, scoring three goals and conceding six, leaving them down in 15th place. Their most recent league fixture before the European trip was a 1-1 draw at home to Málaga on 13 September 2026, a match in which Iago Aspas suffered a thigh injury; Giráldez was openly critical of the early-afternoon, high-heat kick-off time afterwards. Borja Iglesias is also unavailable through injury.
Celta enter the 2026/27 UEFA Europa League league phase off the back of their 6th-place finish in La Liga in 2025/26. Their opening league-phase fixture is away to Omonia Nicosia of Cyprus at the GSP Stadium on 16 September 2026, kicking off at 17:45 UK time. Omonia go into the match unbeaten in their own European qualifying path, having eliminated Lincoln Red Imps and Sint-Truidense to reach the league phase of the Europa League for the first time since 2022/23. With Aspas and Iglesias both missing, Celta go to Nicosia short of attacking options and still searching for their first win of the season in any competition. Full team news, the Celta starting line-up, and the result of the Omonia match were not established from the sources read here as of the time of writing.
